The Four Areas of Clinical Hygiene

 

Hygiene and disinfection in the healthcare sector can be categorised into four distinct areas; Instrument care, Surface care, Special Area care and Skin and Hand care.

The majority of products within these areas are colour coded to help ensure ease of use with staff and the correct application is used in the correct environment.

Topdental - Instrument Care

All types of instruments require cleaning and disinfection after use. This includes hand tools such as scalpels and forceps and powered tools such as handpieces and burs. Products that have been designed for use on instruments are usually coloured blue.

Topdental - Surface Care

Surface Care

 

In any clinical environment the disinfection of surfaces is vital to stopping the spread of disease and infection. This can be achieved with both alcohol free (orange) and alcohol based (green) products, usually in the form of a wipe or spray.

Topdental - Special Area Care

Special Area Care

 

Items included within the special areas category include dental impressions and aspirator / suction systems. Complete cleaning and disinfection of these items is considered absolutely necessary. Products designed for this purpose are usually marked yellow.

Topdental - Skin & Hand Care

Skin & Hand Care

 

Hands have been proven to be the number one transmitter of pathogens in everyday life. It is considered crucial that hands are disinfected to prevent the spread of disease. Products developed for use on skin and hands are indicated pink.
